artist's statement

Most of my recent work investigates the philosophical and symbolic implications of ordinary human and technological interventions within nature. I explore the complex structure of natural and man-made structures and systems both at the micro and macro levels, often employing symbolic religious forms as a formal framework for contemplation. I also try to contrast the human need for control of the elements and environment with the way natural processes and the natural environment affect us, exploring the relationship between self and environment as both dualistic and non-dualistic. Although committed to my current themes, I approach my specific subjects with open-ended questions about time, site, archetypal structure, chaos, and the longing for meaning. Likewise, I approach my materials and process with open-hearted experimentation, allowing the materials and presentation to remain flexible. Although my most recent work is in video, and I have extensive knowledge of digital video production and editing, I also work frequently with sculpture and photography, and have always used drawing and painting as a foundation for exploring ideas, and do not feel limited to any particular media.
